Udvar-Hazy Library & Learning Center on Graduation Day, May 3rd, 2008 here in Prescott Arizona @ the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University campus.

Both Christine and Steven were here to make remarks during the dedication. Steven F. Udvar-Hazy, President of International Lease Finance Corp., gave the Commencement address, talking about the responsibilities of students in this globally competitive world.

The new library will probably have it's new smell for a long time to come. Even now, interior construction has started to install European glass wall displays for our Guinness World Book of Records, world-renown Kalusa display of miniature wooden, hand-painted airplanes.

During the Dedication, over 1,600 people came and went for the food. Dedication ceremonies on a nearly picture-perfect, blue sky day in Prescott, Arizona featured food from on-site Chartwells dining room staff. Impeccably displayed and served: 2 meat carving stations for roast beef and turkey, a dessert station with little cheesecake tasty treats and chocolate-covered strawberries. Also champagne for all! Flower and table displays throughout the 2 floors of the new library.

The Library dedication will be the talk of campus and the place to BE forevermore.ERAU Prescott Libraryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17538016732178686362noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3643101901110843639.post-9982742410211539172014-06-11T11:27:00.000-07:002014-06-11T11:27:31.416-07:00Wordle - Flipped Classroom

A New Library - Or how to change your library without really trying

Could our library have seen more changes the past year? From the addition of the new Scholar's coffee Cafe in the front of the Hazy Library & Learning Center to the URI - Undergraduate Research Institute.

It hasn't come without alot of hard work: This summer alone, a team of 6 helped take out more than a dozen shelves to consolidate the book collection and move the magazine racks on the way to enlarging the footprint and creating collaborative space for students and faculty. It's all good!

Increasingly, caffeinated students, faculty and even the local public find their way to the library ASK desk (AKA 'reference desk' in a past life), getting help with everything from using the printers to finding books and e-books in the YLN catalog.

Nighttime finds students sitting around tables, eating, lounging ,working together. Different is hardly the word for it - a new environment is more like it - people working together!

This year's ASEE (American Society for Engineering Education) conference was held in Pittsburgh. The ELD (Engineering Librarian Division) is a close-knit group of librarians engaged in engineering and technical operations all over the U.S.

There is someone who's project is to make sure the ELD group has a good time and meets each other. The day of my arrival, Sunday, a group of us headed to the National Aviary. The previous night, others had attended a Pirates baseball game @ the stadium not far from the David E. Lawrence Convention Center (LEED-certified, mind you -- GOLD!)

From there it was all good: great conference proceedings to choose from, my moderating a session on information literacy tools for the ELD division, my co-presenting a session to the Ethics division, attending division planning meetings and dinner @ the Heinz Museum. We got to tour all 7 floors of this fabulous place after the meal and banquet awards.

After the official end of the conference, I took 2 more days to visit and get acquainted with Pittsburgh: the Steel City diner, Warhol Museum, Carnegie Museum of Art and Natural History, the Mattress Factory (fabulous contemporary installation art) the oldest Carnegie Library, dinner with ELDers @ the famous Duquesne Incline and dessert and cocktails @ the top restaurant, Monterey Bay, drinks later @ the Church Brewery (real, de-commissioned Catholic Church!), Lunch @ the Frick Art and Historical Center with ERAU colleague Dick, and of course the fabulous Cathedral of Learning and Nationality Rooms on U Pitt's campus. Along the way, I had NO BAD meal, enjoyed using the bus transit system and saw a Corvette classic car show on display near the Doubletree.

What was not to like @ the annual ASEE conference???? ERAU Prescott Libraryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17538016732178686362noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3643101901110843639.post-2801708862848747802008-07-08T16:29:00.001-07:002008-07-08T16:35:19.562-07:00Summertime & the Living is Wakonse!

Was it just a couple of months ago that I was in Camp Tontozona in northern Arizona with Wakonse?
